Community Outreach

Our Mission

The Southern Astronomical Society has always been committed in sharing the knowledge of the night sky with the next generation. If you are a teacher or educator and would like to hold a field night for your school, work, or community group, please contact us with your request.

To help you with your request, please note a few things to keep in mind when planing an astronomy night for your community. It’s best to have at least a five-day-old waxing Moon or a planet in the sky at the time of your event. Having these celestial objects in the night sky will make your community's field night a lot more rewarding and exciting. Click here for the target guide.

Programs

We offers a wide range of observation programs, as well as wet-weather plans.

Deep Sky Tour: A set list of nebulae and galaxies will be planned and shown, changes every month, with trivia questions to enhance the experience.

Planetary and Lunar: Availability depends on the position of the planets. Touring the planets and observe lunar surface features.

Build Your Own Plan: Select targets from the target guide, and we will display on the screen or observe through a visual telescope.

Cost

There is a very modest cost to help cover the cost of running our astronomy club and equipment maintenance. I’m sure all your community members will enjoy their evening looking through our telescopes at the wonders of the night sky.

Community: $2 per person or $5 per family

Schools: Flat Rate $200 per Event

The Fine Prints

Please allow at least 2 month notice, this is to give the committee enough time to organise our members to participate at your astronomy event and to make sure that the Moon will be in the correct phase for viewing.

We are equipped with telescopes, computer, sound systems and projectors. For that reason, we prefer running field nights at our Oxenford club house.
